Supremely capable, hugely fast, superb luxury and solid build
I had a 2019 C63 sitting on my drive through lockdown and what a car it was. Crazy engine and more torque than sense. However, it got a lot less use than it should: drives were too short and infrequent and anything other than perfect sunny weather led to the tyres lighting up.
So I went looking for an EV. The Taycan was one of the very few that looked like it would get anywhere near what I wanted, maybe with the the Audi E-tron GT. After a visit to Porsche to see one in the flesh I was hooked, especially after a test drive.
Porsche also offer a Porsche Experience Centre day at Porsche Silverstone. It’s a chance for you to get in your car and drive it on their track and it’s superb. It really showed just how capable the car is. The brakes are just awesome and the balance and suspension/ride is pretty much magic. The feel and precision in the steering is something no other EV gets near and the instant power is almost unbelievable. Porsche make cars that drive as sports cars first and EV’s second. Whilst you can’t get away from the mass totally, the way it handles it really is hard to believe. Just an amazing sports car.
In daily use, the Taycan is so easy to live with. Journeys are made a pleasure by how it drives. The interior is just so well built and put together and all of the materials and touch points are beautiful. The seats (18 way sports seats), hug you tight, but you should try them first as some won’t find them accommodating enough. The screens are excellent and even the touch screen a/c panel is very well thought out and easy to use whilst driving.
A gripe is the reversing camera: it is not great quality but the worst thing is the software and fish-eye default view which make it unusable in the dark and wet.
Overall though, the Taycan is in my opinion, the best sports EV you can buy. The Turbo in particular is so performant as to be almost unbelievable but most of all: it’s a great car to drive. And that’s what I wanted I’m an EV.
Oh and did I mention that it looks gorgeous!
