Owner Review

Better than I could've imagined

Honestly, I was hesitant to commit to an EV. We had two ICE vehicles (2011 Mazda 3 and a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek), and we do a lot of longer trips (2+ hours) so I was nervous about switching over to all electric and having issues with finding chargers or driving in the winter with reduced range.

Fairly soon after we got the Ioniq (and gave up the Mazda), I decided to take it on a 2750km road trip across multiple provinces and states. I was really nervous about getting stuck somewhere along the way. I drove through areas up to 200km without a charger or areas with no cell service whatsoever. After the very first day of that trip, I was already thinking about selling the Crosstrek and getting a second EV.

The Ioniq is amazing. It's comfortable: passengers always comment on how spacious it is, and I really enjoy the seat and steering wheel heaters. It's fun to drive: I mostly drive in ECO mode, but even then, the pick up is really good and I love entering the highway and being able to pick up speed instantly. It's stylish: I often have people stop and comment on the car. In Montreal, someone pulled over to say, "Excuse me, sorry, just want to say, you have a really cool car." Yes. I know.

We're outdoorsy people. Road trips, camping, field work, and hiking and biking are a big part of our lives. The HI5 suits our lifestyle, no problem. The amount of space makes it easy to pack for camping and road trips with our dog and cat in the back. The amount of range allows us not to stress about going quite a ways into areas without chargers or cell service.

The downsides: the shape of the back cuts into storage space. It's still very spacious (I just fit a trunk-load of stuff + full-sized dresser in there with room to spare!). It hasn't been a problem for us yet, but I imagine folks who travel with a lot of square gear might find it annoying (my parents are musicians so this might not be the EV for them). The lack of a rear windshield wiper seems like a poor design. On my road trip, I would clean the window at the gas stations while charging. Luckily, many of the charging stations had window-cleaning gear beside the chargers. Another thing that bugs me is that there is a lot going on with the screens. Maybe I'll learn more efficient ways to navigate, but often I'm clicking three or four buttons (therefore, taking my eyes off the road longer) when it should be one. E.g., to turn the seat heater on, I go to the Warmer screen and turn on the seat and it automatically goes to the highest heat (3), so I have to click it down to 2, then 1. But because I'm looking at the road, if I don't hit it in the right spot sometimes I accidentally hit it down to 0 then have to start all over again.

Overall, we're super happy with this car and would recommend it to anyone! The other thing that sold us was how helpful and friendly the people at Hyundai were. My in-laws weren't impressed with their service at Volkswagen and are now looking at Hyundais. Friends of ours waited eight months for their Chevy Bolt and the dealership accidentally sold it to someone else so they went and bought a Hyundai!
